STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS

November 9, 2009

The Student Council will sponsor a Crazy Hat Day on Monday, Nov. 23. Students who would like to wear the hats are expected to make two donations-- $1 for the Student Council's yearly start-up fund and an item for the Brookfield Food Bank.

The council voted Monday to sponsor the Thanksgiving collection and is asking that the canned goods and non-perishables donated to the food bank be items for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Items may be brought in anytime between now and Nov. 23. They will be collected in the basket by the office and will be added to the items being collected all year by 7th graders. Teachers may collect the items and bring them up to the basket. The $1 student council donations may be sent in an envelope to the office on Monday, Nov. 23.

Students also have the option of wearing hats as twins or triplets for this special day. So it's a combination Crazy Hat and Twin Day. School uniforms will be required for the day, though.

The council is working on other ideas for special days and collections for the upcoming months. The Christmas Sharing Assembly on Dec. 23 is another big event for the council members.

The total number of members has risen to 22 with three new members this meeting. Taylor Guth, 6th grade; Mikaela McFarland, 5th grade, and Falon Oeser, 8th grade, are the newest members. Students may attend a regular meeting to join.

The Student Council has started up again this year with 19 students so far. The next meeting is Monday, Nov. 9. Any more students in Grades 5-8 who would like to join should attend this second organizational meeting.

The new members so far are (8th grade) Kimberly Sands, Chris Bohling and Kyle McGinniss, (7th grade) Matthew Hooker, Noah Coyle, Georgina Luongo, Rory Ronan, and Rene Rossman, (6th grade) Emily Gallagher, Giovanni Luongo, Francesca Piccolo, Claire Deisenroth, Nicole Rossman, Katie Giradot, and Stephen Bohling, (5th grade) Amy Bohling, James Harron, Laura Russell and Thomas Gavel.

The purpose of the council is to lead through Christ’s example and to help enrich the lives of the student body and the local and global communities. Members are expected to contribute ideas and participate in the planning of activities throughout the year.

Some examples of recent Student Council activities include the Christmas-time Sharing Assembly, the school store, reading during Catholic Schools Week at Sunday Masses, raffles, Halloween’s Orange and Black Dress Down Day, and collections for various food banks and the Midnight Run in New York City, coordinated by a SJS graduate, Tim Davis.

Members have been asked to research ideas about charities we could become involved in and on-going fund-raisers that our school could join. Information should come to the next session.
